GMU 66, S33, and G5:
- While primarily known for deer and elk, portions of these GMUs contain suitable moose habitat, particularly in riparian zones and high-altitude areas.
- We will focus on areas within these GMUs that provide the best potential for moose encounters.
Specific High-Altitude Riparian Zones:
- Moose favor high-altitude areas with willow thickets, and near streams and lakes. We will locate these areas before the hunt.
- These areas are often near small lakes, and slow moving creeks.
Surrounding Wilderness Areas:
- Gunnison and Lake City are surrounded by vast tracts of wilderness, providing access to prime moose habitat.
- This includes areas adjacent to the Alpine Triangle.
Areas within the Uncompahgre National Forest:
- The expansive national forest provides excellent habitat for moose.
